RICHES Internship Blog Post #11

This week working on my internship at RICHES, I have continued working on my oral history transcription. The transcription process is quite interesting and I am learning a lot from doing it. I have never had any experience with oral history transcription before this. This past spring semester in Introduction to Public History, our class final project was to work with histories from the Veterans Legacy Project. However, due to the outbreak of COVID-19 we were unable to meet in person for our group final project. So our final project was cut. This was for the most part the only exposure I have had to anything oral history related previously. I am finding that I have to go over parts of it multiple times to make sure I get everything. It is sometimes hard to understand everything because sometimes the person being interviewed laughs while she is speaking, which makes it slightly difficult to understand what she is saying.  It is really interesting that you record noises in the b

This week working on my internship at RICHES, I started working on my oral history transcription of Sandy Cawthern’s oral history interview. I watched the entire oral history interview; as a result, I got a better understanding of how to transcribe the interview. The information Dr. Lester and Geoff had given Anna and I, regarding how to properly transcribe oral history interviews, has helped a great deal in my understanding since I have never had the opportunity to transcribe an oral history before.  This week, I also have been working on getting permission to send the finding aid I created for the UCF Special Collections and University Archives to Dr. Lester and the rest of the team working on the Bending Towards Justice Project and Exhibit so they can find useful information in the “Carol Mundy Research Files” that might be pertinent to the exhibit. Such information might include information on July Perry or other information on the city of Ocoee and its residents. I am s

Over the last two weeks at my internship with RICHES, we continued to work on the Bending Towards Justice Exhibit. Last week, we did not have a blog post due because it was a national holiday for the 4 th  of July. We all continued on our work for the internship and exhibit though. I had been in correspondence with Dr. Lester about the maps for the court cases. We will use maps that Amy is working on to put on the website for the digital exhibit and attach bios about the court cases on voter suppression and voting rights. We will address this again at the beginning of the next week when Kirk is back to see how to proceed next. When I met with Dr. Gordon this week for my independent studies course I am taking with her, we talked about seeing if someone like Kirk, who is better versed in these digital tools, could perhaps get the little pin drops and timeline done quicker since the deadline and opening of the exhibit is coming up rather quickly.  I also found a list with descr

This week, working on the internship at RICHES, I gathered information on Supreme Court cases. I have been discussing further ideas with not just the Bending Towards Justice team, but also with Dr. Gordon, who I am working with on this specific portion of the project. I had an idea to use a map and timeline to show the origins of each of the Supreme Court cases that supported or did not support voter suppression and when the case occurred. Each of these locations would have pin drops on a map of the United States, when clicking the pin drop it would pull up a brief bio of the case and its decision and perhaps the justices that served on the case. This would allow for this portion of the exhibit to be both interactive and not overly word heavy. It could also be possible to put photos in the information bubbles. These photographs, as I mentioned last week, would have to either have no copyright, or RICHES would have to get permission for educational purposes to use the photogr

This week, working on my internship at RICHES, we made headway with the email issues with the teams program. Kirk was able to invite me to have access to the different folders, however, I cannot make changes or add anything. So I will have to send any documents that need to be uploaded to teams once they have been approved by Dr. Gordon to either Geoff or Dr. Gordon, who will have to upload the document to teams on my behalf. That being said, I am very excited to be able to work on the Bending Towards Justice Project now and help out Dr. Gordon with the legal history portion of the project and looking at voting rights and voter suppression. I met with Dr. Gordon Wednesday for my meeting to talking about my independent studies course, which she is the instructor for. During this meeting, she told me to look up Supreme Court cases on this topic and their decisions. She also told me that there was an existing list of a few cases that had been typed up and uploaded into teams,

This week working at RICHES, I have continued to work on my metadata. During our weekly meeting this week, when it was my turn to discuss what I had been working on, I said I had just been working on my metadata. This is because I still do not have access to teams and programs that I need to be able to work on the digital exhibit and a large portion of the internship. I have been extremely excited about this exhibit and been very upset because I have not been able to do any work on it since I am unable to access the necessary program with a great deal of the information I needed to be able to work on the exhibit. I was instructed to submit a ticket to IT last Friday during our Bending Towards Justice meeting. I never heard back from IT. I told this to everyone in our meeting on RICHES meeting on Tuesday. Dr. Lester and a few of the other RICHES staff members are going to work to try to figure out how to fix this issue so I can access the information. In the meantime, Tiffany and I had

This week working on my internship with RICHES, I contacted Rebecca to learn more about the piece of metadata that I had decided to work on to get more information about it. Previously, I was trying to look at other documents on the RICHES website for research for the metadata, but it was down because it was not currently working. However, I am thankful that I was able to get in contact with Rebecca. I will be finishing up the metadata this weekend and hopefully will have it nearly finished at the beginning of next week. Today, we also had our meeting to discuss the project we are all working on, called Bending Towards Justice. I am so excited about this project. There have been a few issues. Mainly since I do not have a staff or faculty email address, I cannot log into teams. Teams is the program that everyone is using for this project, however, I am the only one with access only to a student email address. I was instructed today to submit a ticket to IT to see if they wil
